NORTH WALPOLE — Walpole-New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan, North Walpole Fire Chief William Crawford and Walpole Police Chief Michael Paquette announce that the victim of the fatal fire at 8 East Street in the Town of Walpole, NH that occurred on February 5, 2018 has been identified.

The victim was identified as Daniel Underhill, an 18 year-old resident of Walpole. An autopsy conducted on February 7, 2018 revealed that the cause of death was smoke inhalation and the manner of death was accidental.

The fire is still being investigated by members of the NH State Fire Marshal’s Office, the North Walpole Fire Department, and the Walpole Police Department.

State Fire Marshal Degnan would again like to remind everyone that working smoke alarms save lives and to have an escape plan from you residence in case of a fire. When a fire is detected by smoke alarms, occupants only have minutes to escape before being overcome by the effects of smoke.
