KEENE — The big question tonight at the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Central Square is whether or not squirrels have chewed through any strings of lights. According to Peg Bruce, of the Kiwanis Club, last year the top of the tree didn’t light at the annual lighting because of damage from squirrels. The problem persisted throughout the season, so volunteers armed with Irish Spring soap hung pieces of the soap throughout the tree Saturday hoping the strong smelling soap would ward off the squirrels this year.

The Keene Kiwanis Club’s 5th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is planned for tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Central Square.
