The report of a room fire in a house at 153 Island Street came in at 5:10 p.m., according to the Keene Fire Department.
Fire crews began to arrive on the scene at 5:13 pm. The first firefighters on the scene reported that there was a room fire on the second floor of the two-story house.
They raised the response to a two-alarm fire for more manpower and units for assistance and fire crews were assigned to extinguish the fire. The fire crews and those others that arrived were told to check for any extension of the fire.
By 5:19, the fire had been extinguished. Crews remained on scene for another hour to confirm the fire was out.
The fire was kept to just the single second story room, however, the second floor sustained a substantial amount of smoke damage.
Swanzey Fire, Keene Police, and Eversource assisted Keene crews at the scene of the fire. Crews from Walpole, Chesterfield, Spofford, and Swanzey covered the Keene fire stations while the Keene crews dealt with the fire.
The building damage is placed approximately at 25,000 dollars. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Keene Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit.
